Rio revival

Designed by modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer, ‘70s party hotspot the Hotel Nacional has relaunched as the Gran Meliá Nacional Rio de Janeiro. The interiors of the imposing cylindrical glass building, located opposite São Conrado beach, have been brought up to date and its original artworks and gardens retained. It now includes a rooftop bar, a private floor for VIPs and a helipad.

BOAT cuisine

Combining top-class cuisine with the life aquatic, Silversea’s sleek Silver Muse will launch in Monaco this month. The fleet’s ninth vessel offers small-ship intimacy with spacious all-suite accommodation, and the luxury quota is enhanced by eight restaurants. For more formal dining, there is Relais & Châteaux La Dame, while at the more laid-back Hot Rocks, guests can select meat or fish to cook on lava stones at their table. The Silver Muse will call at 34 countries and 130 ports in its maiden year alone.

Alps and away

Just because the ski season is coming to a close doesn’t mean that Switzerland is off the holiday destination list. Those seeking rejuvenation and relaxation close to nature should look to the newly redesigned Waldhaus Flims hotel in the heart of the Alps. Its recently expanded spa offers facilities including Turkish baths, a sauna and state-of-the-art treatment rooms. Meanwhile, for outdoor types, there are guided walks and a freshwater swimming lake; for families, there’s a children’s club; and foodies will find four dining options, including restaurant specialising in fondues and raclettes.

Roman revamp

Perched at the top of the Spanish Steps, the Hotel Eden Rome reopens its doors this month after major renovations. Contemporary touches are paired with traditional Roman architecture, while new additions include an urban spa and the Il Giardino rooftop restaurant, which offers spectacular city views and chef Fabio Ciervo’s modern take on classic Italian dishes.

Simply the fest

With a lineup of more than 100 bands as well as theatre, comedy, dance and literary events, Wychwood Festival (2nd to 4th June) is bursting at the seams with activities for the whole family. Held at Cheltenham Racecourse, its Cotswold location provides an added allure to the bijou three-day event. You can, of course, stay on-site, but there is a more comfortable option at the neighbouring five-star Ellenborough Park hotel. The stately manor house has an extensive spa, an outdoor heated pool, impeccable room service and luxurious en-suites.
